Is It Still "Vintage" When It Looks This Good?

Comments on "Is It Still "Vintage" When It Looks This Good?"

Blogger MARIA H said ... (8:06 AM) :

do these people dress qith such devotion on a daily basis?
It is a homage to the great gatsby?

All this nostalgia does not make sense to me: a colletor's overload that fails to mutate into anything progresive.

Blogger The Sartorialist said ... (8:15 AM) :

I guess my question would be -

why is dressing "progressive" important?

Blogger will anderson said ... (8:21 AM) :

first. tom browne would be proud of this older gent. that is a remarkable style, nostalgic or not.
second. dressing progressive simply expressive that you are a progressive thinker, which i feel is vital. nostalgia in fashion, music, architecture...might imply a feeling that you're either afraid of the future, insecure about your place in it, or that your best days are clearly behind you. if you like an element of nostalgia...more power to you. but if you believe the way you dress expresses something about yourself...best to keep it in moderation.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:43 AM) :

Progressive dressing implies progressive thinking? puh-LEEEEZE! if that's correct, why do and did some of the most progressive thinkers of our time dress like slobs? if an item of dress, be it vintage or state-of-the-art-fashionable, suits you, makes you happy, feels comfortable, suits the occasion (ideally, it will do all of these) - wear it!

Blogger madeline said ... (8:56 AM) :

Does "vintage" imply that it usually does NOT look good?

I think Yves Saint Laurent (the man himself) might be offended.

Might I remind maria that fashion is cycle - nothing is rarely new.

Blogger EPS said ... (9:20 AM) :

I think there is a difference between, "vintage" and Classic or Timeless elegance, which will always be in style

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:26 AM) :

Hi!
Started to check out your blog when i read about you in a swedish newspaper. Just a bit curious..what kind of camera do you use?

Blogger abril said ... (9:27 AM) :

Wouldn't you wear a new dress conserved on a box for 50 years, even if the dress has never been used?

Besitoss

PS: Now you make me wish to have the same size than my mother when she was my age and use all that dresses that she has stored for ages... :(

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:38 AM) :

This is splendid, not dated at all. I wish my own coloring were different so I could wear it as well as this gentleman. When I think of Gatsby, I always picture him in spring and summer dress, with light sandy colors like this. What did men with darker complexions and colors wear during the summer, during this period?

I don't know about the above comments, he just looks good. Healthy, happy, smiling, but most of all happy. I just love looking at beautiful things, and he's one of them. It's such a treat to see all the variety of style and beauty out there. I also get inspired by someone on the "street" who looks this good because I believe he must feel good. My experience is that when you try to present yourself in a clean and well-dressed way you feel better. I come to Sartorialist just for that reason. Thanks!

The Chrysler Building has been standing for over seventy years. And still there is no building in gotham built since that comes anywhere near its splendour and perfection. The Ghery building by the Chelsea Piers just recently popped up(like a polyp).

While the Ghery building is certainly progressive, it looks about as permanent and pleasing as an crushed empty milk gallon.

Classic style never ages, but endures and gains strength. Pop artifice and need for innovation had led to flacid ideas, flacid lines, and flacid times. Nostalgic?

Guilty as charged.

Blogger mareGa said ... (11:00 AM) :

Whatever man... he looks good. Really good. Somebody told me one time, everybody is entitled to their own devices.

And he looks quite happy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:49 AM) :

In an effort to keep this lighthearted (fails to mutate?) - he looks awesome, he looks like he's enjoying his day and his life. Sometimes, clothes are just clothes and you can enjoy them and have fun with them, as in this guy's case, or you can examine them on a hoity-toity pyscho-social level, but that takes so much more energy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:57 AM) :

You know what's really interesting about this photo? It took me a minute to realize he was an older gentleman; if dressed in the usual cargo shorts, running shoes and lousy tshirt, I would have been able to tell this right away. Something about this outfit makes him look....young!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 PM) :

Forget Thom Browne, I say it's time for Tom Wolfe. Break out the mint juleps!

Blogger Asi Mod said ... (12:00 PM) :

That is a good question. Why is dressing "progressive" important when "vintage" looks so good?

Well, the changes in fashion is purely driven by the fashion houses and designers; and the people who buy "progressive" fashion want to look current and hip, instead of "vintage" and dowdy.

It's the same reason women wear stilleto. It is not comfortable but it sure looks good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:30 PM) :

Like the look! Well done...question the black tie a bit.

Blogger Genuine Lustre said ... (12:45 PM) :

I think this guy looks fabulous. As a woman, I"m a little tired of fat hairy guys in tanktops. This is a welcome reminder of a more genteel era when people had standards.

Blogger Mr. Rover said ... (12:47 PM) :

Robert Bryan ALWAYS looks this stylish...it's not a matter of vintage clothes but how you wear it, and he has a great eye for putting together great looks with his vintage clothes.
I'd say that from experience, vintage menswear is usually better constructed and cut in a more flattering than any of the either potato-sack or shrunken-fit suits available now. Perhaps some people just prefer and are comfortable enough in their clothes to go to a picnic and dance in style, and not in a t-shirt and shorts?
maria, i don't quite understand your logic. Great Gatsby is but a speck in the annals of culture from the early 20th Century, and as an unillustrated book, it really couldn't be paying homage to their style. Besides that, the Great Gatsby as a film in the 70s was costumed by Ralph Lauren, and were a caracature (sp?) of 1920s clothing and detested (clothing-wise) by anyone in the know. I've found that people that wear vintage clothes (including myself)value the quality of the craftsmanship from a time before the corner-cutting of the last few years. I personally enjoy wearing them because they, almost like designer pieces, are rare (like a one-off), and can only really be spotted by a few discerning connoisseurs(unless it's designer stuff with loads of gaudy labels).
Sartorialist, the color and fabric combinations that you chose look great- whether or not it is vintage! Keep it up!

is that Robert Bryant? who was previously the fashion editor at NY times?
he looks brilliant!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:56 PM) :

i have an overwhelming urge to drink some lemonade on a shady porch, and address this man as "Senator."

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:12 PM) :

I guess in theory I like what he is trying to do. But, he looks like he should be selling Good Humor ice cream out the back of his truck. The look is too affected for a man living in NYC. If he was south of the Mason-Dixon line then OK. But he's a Yankee to the core, not the real ambassador.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:16 PM) :

The whole Roaring 20's coterie looks incredible! Impossibly festive and crisp. The roomy, light-colored men's pants are knocking me out. They must look fantastic on the dance floor. How are 80-year old white pants so perfectly preserved?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:46 PM) :

Robert Bryan is the greatest!

Blogger Just an Observation said ... (3:03 PM) :

When U have style....U HAVE STYLE!!

THXSAR!

Blogger Marnee said ... (3:24 PM) :

Progressive thinking, much like its corollary, hipster style, is an illogical, superficial, contrived mess.

Go for objectivity. Objectively speaking this man's sense of style is the bee's knees. The reasons are obvious.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:35 PM) :

The questions raised by the comments above seem to break down along the fashion vs. style divide. This is nothing very fashionable about this man's dress, but it is quite stylish (if you ask me). Give me stylish over fashionable every single time.

Blogger Brett Svatek said ... (3:37 PM) :

If he were less "bottoned down"...more casual, it would look less like a costume. Lose the bowtie, and open all but the middle button on the vest.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:12 PM) :

Wow. I have a new respect for white nubucks. That outfit in cream and white says Fresh, Spring and Young ...without saying metrosexual. It's still very masculine.

Are those Bass nubucks, or something more expensive? They look great, but I'm on a budget!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:14 PM) :

He looks phenomenal. From far away, I couldn't tell he was old. He has a great smile and seemingly good skin for a guy his age. He is dressed impeccably well and has perfected this look. Bravo! It doesn't feel costume-y on him. I imagine this is what he dressed like when he was younger. Truly an inspiration. I love this.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:16 PM) :

This look is really never "wrong". Ralph Lauren got this fact some time ago, and has succeeded mightily from it. Just a small "tweak" here and there and it moves forward in a timeless way through the years.

Blogger lewehrman said ... (7:00 PM) :

I worked with Robert years ago as an asst. at The Times and he is even nicer than he is stylish.

And that's a whole helluvalot!

This whole series is just so cool!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:19 PM) :

God Bless Robert Bryan! J'dore!

Blogger sofie king said ... (9:36 PM) :

Wow! Totally spic-and-span! I love it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:24 PM) :

the fit of each piece is what makes this outfit so great. in my opinion, it's very modern, because it's all in such light colors and fabrics.

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (6:20 AM) :

Remarkable style - great smile. He gives a lesson to all of us on how to grow old gracefully and stylishly without succumbing to trends etc.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:53 PM) :

Makes him look so young, if worn with that smile. Great style, why not bring this into fashion again

Blogger Butch said ... (3:45 PM) :

This is IT!

Which is to assert that style--the proper understanding of color, proportion, fit, appropriateness, plus an insistence on quality--is timeless.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:49 PM) :

anything Robert Bryan wears is always perfection.

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (7:39 AM) :

Mr. Rover - big faux-pas there - if you were in the know as you say, you would know that the film Great Gatsby's costumes were designed by Theoni Vachlioti Aldredge and she got an Oscar for them. The movie is revered for the costumes, not detested for them.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:02 PM) :

I'm surprised that nobody has quite bluntly said: progressives dress progressive, and nostalgics dress nostalgic, and both of them are going to keep it up forever.

he looks amazing! he's what a real gentleman, so rare these days, should be and dress. it's not vintage nor an homage but just good taste. i've always appreciated his genuine knowledge and style. he doesn't try to be anything but graceful and sexy!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:50 PM) :

Looks good on him, all that counts.

Blogger veritas said ... (4:39 AM) :

if i was back in the 20s i would have dressed in a outfit like that, and i would have had a straw hat for good measure :o)))))
