I like the idea of adding a casual element to the simple but sophisticated pairing of the button up, sweater, and blazer. However, putting track pants over khakis strikes me as odd, impractical, and uncomfortable.

Love the top half of the picture, and the warm light on his face.

Blogger gabrielazeanadal@hotmail.com said ... (7:33 AM) :

WOW Sart! These Hyeres shots are so refreshing, so wonderful. It feels asif your work was getting a new dimension. This one is almost epic and the yesterday's one bellow... I'm fascinated with it!

Blogger Marianna said ... (7:34 AM) :

Ooohh I love this! I like the track-suit pants (? were they that?) coupled with the vest + shirt. And I love the look of his face, all together there's a really unique style that oozes from this guy!

Blogger Rice and Beans Vintage said ... (7:35 AM) :

I absolutely love this. There are so many juxtaposed styles going on here that somehow it just works beautifully. I'd love to know what kind of shoes he was wearing.

Blogger cat minoki said ... (8:12 AM) :

Oh!
Adidas Pants pulled over chinos?
That´s new to me. Looks like he´s making a joke out of it because just with the chinos ( or whatever trousers they are) his outfit would be complete, though normal.
I like the jumper´s sleeves coming out of the jacket...

Interesting person! Great colours,
the light in Hyeres is stunning!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:20 AM) :

ideal man

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:21 AM) :

In the normal fasion world, wearing tracks pants over a pair of slacks would be considered as a horrible CRIME. But he somehow makes it work.
Damn you, John Nollet, with all your coolness...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:31 AM) :

Sometimes i think the excellent photography makes the outfit better than it is. This is one of those times

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:50 AM) :

I can't tell whether the pants that man is wearing are jeans or adidas trackpants. The combination of the crisp white shirt is good though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:52 AM) :

Me encanta!!! Un look imposible de llevar, sólo una persona entre mil podría hacerlo. Chapeau.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:55 AM) :

He's a handsome guy. The wild hair and beard look good on him. I like his look from the waist up, but he loses me from the waist down. I just don't like track pants with a blazer. And, wearing a belt with track pants? It strikes me as a bit silly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:57 AM) :

Just a gorgeous homeless guy, right?

The track pants completely ruin this for me. They make him look half-mad.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:57 AM) :

Wowee! Who cares about the clothes, this man is gorgeous! Got a number for this one? :-)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:58 AM) :

that's hot!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:00 AM) :

What I love about this photo is that he is overall very masculine looking, but his eyes are so pretty.

Blogger momo said ... (9:03 AM) :

Layered up for a walk on the windy beach! He looks amazingly like a teacher I had in France when I studied in Bordeaux: beautiful eyes.

Blogger Nathan said ... (9:05 AM) :

i L.O.V.E the tracksuit pants on the jacket! My Mum would kill me if tried this though TBH

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:10 AM) :

Is he just wearing the sweatpants over some khakis? either way the look is pleasing.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:14 AM) :

looks like magnum

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:17 AM) :

Wow. This guy looks totally cool. Who is this person? He almost looks homeless, but no, the belt and the white shirt are too expensive looking. I think this outfit is absolutely brilliant. Love his hair with it, too. Reminds me of how fantastic brown and red are together.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:20 AM) :

it's John Nollet !!!

Hairdresser of Monica Bellucci and Vanessa Paradis

Blogger Ann (MobayDP) said ... (9:22 AM) :

hmm. Never would have thought of pairing sweat pants with a jacket. But Heck! Why not?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:38 AM) :

Above the waist = Very nice!
Below the waist of the ill-fitting, too tight track pants = ??????

Blogger Diana said ... (9:43 AM) :

Jesus in Adidas pants!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:44 AM) :

Track pants over khakis? that is truly unique! the color is lovely on his face, he's so relaxed and real.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:44 AM) :

This guy looks cool. Love the jogger bots!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:46 AM) :

Love it. I wonder what shoes he matched with this.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:01 AM) :

Is he wearing sweat-pants on top of trousers? I'm confused.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:13 AM) :

It's John Nollet !

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:16 AM) :

cool without the belt.... Or might he be wearing another pair of trousers underneath? Sweatpants are the next big thing, I guess.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:22 AM) :

love his look. he is gorgeous! but why is he wearing track pants over khakis?

Blogger Michelé said ... (10:26 AM) :

I like the lengths of his sleeves, the way he managed to look relaxed / laid-back and causal wearing those sports pants. gee... love also his hair and beard, the causal breeze in his expressions :)

Blogger Aimée said ... (10:30 AM) :

Who doesn't wanna look so relaxed in France?
Love the light too...

Blogger Karmander said ... (11:22 AM) :

wow, track pants with what's going on on top...that is bold, and I'm digging it. The red is perfect. Of course I may be biased because I'm IN LOVE WITH HIM. His hair is driving me crazy, it's so beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:27 AM) :

Wow, how cool is that? A real man wearing real clothes. What's going on with those sweat pants?! He looks like un vrai gitano puro, doesn't he?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:37 AM) :

Oh my god! Who is he? I need to know.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:46 AM) :

i can see why he caught your attention. more than the fact that he's wearing track pants with a blazer, shirt, and long-sleeved sweater, those eyes could pierce through anyone who manages to hold a gaze with this man, even for just a second.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:50 AM) :

What? Am I in love with him? Sweat pants over slacks?

The light at Hyeres couldn't be better for your photography.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:56 AM) :

Fabulous! Love the mix of tailoring with casual. Who'd have thunk it?

Blogger Laguna Beach Fogey said ... (11:59 AM) :

Great photo, Sart. I love this gentleman's beard and long hair (and ponytail?). It's very terrorist chic, in a Che sort of way. The track suit trousers are the piece de resistance here. G-E-N-I-U-S! We definitely don't see enough men in track suits or sweats. More, please.

Blogger okso said ... (12:01 PM) :

hyeres is where the style's at. insane combination of colors, i love it!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:16 PM) :

Such a handsome man!!! God I love France.

Blogger António Erre said ... (12:18 PM) :

Don´t like the hair.
The trousers in despite of the wrong pockets are a plus, because of the colour and stripes, for the upper side - which is perfect.
The sea balances and brings mood.

Blogger Anne Watkins said ... (12:22 PM) :

Love this combination of comfort and classic. So cool; like a runner's version of a tuxedo. My only question is - what is the belt for?

Blogger Cassaundra said ... (12:39 PM) :

I enjoy this shot very much, mostly because of his eyes. Very epic photo.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:57 PM) :

Fabulous man - very stylish: there is nothing of the scruffy about this hirsute homme. I particularly like the sober white shirt, jacket and jumper against the burgundy trousers with the racing stripes.

Blogger yasmine said ... (12:58 PM) :

how handsome!

i like that he mixes something somewhat dressy with casual track pants.

Blogger Mitchell Weiss said ... (1:03 PM) :

The background is breathtaking. Looking at the outfit from top to bottom, the colors all compliment each other well. The pieces collectively are interesting, especially the length of the sweater's sleeve and the track pants. I think the track pants worn over his chino's are quite cheeky as is the playfulness of his sweater sleeve.

Blogger tn said ... (1:04 PM) :

wow what a great look. Love the wild-man hair, love the track pants. Talk about putting "sports" into sports jacket!!

Blogger Jessica said ... (1:26 PM) :

Very Daniel Day-Lewis.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:36 PM) :

Just lovely!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:38 PM) :

Is he wearing those warm-up pants over a pair of khaki colored pants?

He's stunning from the waist up.

Blogger Sharona said ... (1:41 PM) :

I love the red pants. They seem a bit rebellious and edgy. And then he has the basic white button down w/ a v neck sweater and jacket. I LOVE jackets with a casual outfit. And such a "pretty" man. Wow. That's sexy.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:43 PM) :

are those track pants?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:01 PM) :

I'm totally in love. Anyone who can pull off those work out pants with that gorgeous combo of clothes on top - what a guy. Who is he?

Blogger Hadley Makes said ... (2:07 PM) :

Very few could pull off a blazer with track pants. Extra marks for this homme.

Blogger Dallas Foster said ... (2:32 PM) :

You've got to be kidding me with those pants. Waist up, class. Waist down, youth soccer league? Run DMC? Royal Tennebaums? Who knows what he was thinking...

Blogger Jamie Welsh Watson said ... (2:36 PM) :

It looks like a great scene from an independent foreign film.

Blogger The Happiest Activist said ... (2:38 PM) :

Not a fan of the track pant over his regular pant...kind of like trying a bit hard, in my opinion. Nothing wrong with creativity or pushing the boundaries, but it reminds me of the dozens of young men who wore super-short track shorts at last year's Austin City Limits festival...it was the trend of the weekend, for sure, but looking back it was really forced. Great jacket on this one, though. The cream undershirt is nice, too.

Blogger Jana FitzGerald said ... (3:18 PM) :

If Devendra Banhart were a fisherman or woodsmith in the 19th century crossed with French Nobility...

The hair is perfectly undone, and he looks just perfectly at ease next to the water. It's nice. Everything above the waist is fantastic, though I think those stripes may be detracting too much from this look. They remind me a bit of Wes Anderson's love for Addidas jumpsuits in Royal Tenenbaums...

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:33 PM) :

hmm is he wearing sweatpants over pants? i can't tell. he's amazing anyway.. i love that red!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:53 PM) :

This man is a vision, the jumper casually covering his hand from within the smart jacket matched with the slouchy casual trouser, the dirty red with the dirty brown, just perfection

Blogger Ammie said ... (4:18 PM) :

Wow, I think I must be a confirmed drama mama because I cannot wait to read the comments on this one.

That said, very fun and unexpected in a static print or magazine but I'm imagining this in person and in practice, and it makes me cringe a little. The colors and those stripes, however, coupled with the simple but perfect background, the lighting, that hair and that beard, and the way you've captured his eyes and his timeless expression -- that saudade, like a mariner out at sea -- just makes this photograph SING.

I'd like to see his shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:50 PM) :

These photos from Hyeres have a quite remarkable, timeless quality - absolutely inspired all of them. So special in fact that I find I keep going back to them.

You are a great photographer - and you keep getting better!

Congratulations!

Blogger Laurence John said ... (4:51 PM) :

your recent work looks more like portraiture than fashion photography. the clothes seem secondary.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:08 PM) :

Sart,

What does he have on under the track pants? Looks like beige boxer shorts to me. What do you reckon?

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:10 PM) :

Those pants are awesomely bizarre. He looks fantastic!

He also kind of looks like Keri Russell (with a beard).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:26 PM) :

that's a very attractive man in a very attractive outfit.

From waist up.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:48 PM) :

what a beautiful man.

Blogger Unknown said ... (7:06 PM) :

young Daniel Day-Lewis could probably pull off anything..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:27 PM) :

This gentleman truly belong here on this site: he is the epitome of effortless style. What--or who's he wearing becomes completely irrelevant; it's how he's wearing it-- the combination of classic with the irreverent. His sense of style is as golden as your sun-drenched portrait sir ;-)

BTW, I don't think he's wearing two pairs of pants: I think the belted part is sewn under the Adidas. It's a cheeky style that's been offered from Jean-Paul Gaultier, Martin Margiela, to Hedi Slimane. This gentleman's version just seems even more cool because it looks like he made it himself.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:31 PM) :

He's perfect.
What a truly wonderful change in how we perceive fashion vs. our real life clothes. To make "leisure wear" (including khakis and then one step further with the adidas track pants) work as Fashion is a joyous thing.

Blogger Unknown said ... (11:06 PM) :

He is beautiful. Love his face. The outfit is sort of funny... but I like it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:09 PM) :

i tried to like it.
scrolled up and down.
back and forth.

but finally exclaimed, Ugh, this does nothing for me!

above and below the sweater/blazer combo is way too dishevelled.

please no repeats on my streets.

p.s. love you, Sart. xoxo

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:10 AM) :

You are getting your touch back on this one Sart! I have been getting worried about you of late... Fame trampling on your trigger finger a bit. This photo is keeping it real!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:44 AM) :

He has the eyes of a prophet.

Blogger The Voracious Vegan said ... (12:55 AM) :

This man is beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:17 AM) :

he's so sexy!

Blogger g said ... (2:23 AM) :

oh yes! this reminds me of my ex boyfriend who could wear sweatpants and worn out t-shirts and still look like god. i'm trying to ignore the fact that he is wearing another pair of something underneath. when i ignore that i love the look.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:11 AM) :

guerrilla-language teacher look is back? mix of kosovo-cheguevara-belfast, maybe becouse he look like daniel day lewis in "in the name of the father" too

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:54 AM) :

Does he have his track pants over a pair of khaki shorts? Good for him! I can imagine that earlier in the day, perhaps around lunch, he had a nice stroll on the beach in his khaki shorts, his long sweater and white shirt, but as evening wore on, he got asked to do something so last minute, he threw on his long pants over the shorts, added the jacket, just to make it special, so that he could continue to meet, or socialize with fabulous new people in Hyeres!

By the way, the word verification for this post is humobebg! Seems like it should mean something ...

Clearly, people have not been paying attention to the 2007 Rugby World Cup which was hosted by France. One of the players who got a lot of media attention was a french player called Sebastien Chabal. He became a bit of an icon overnight, making the caveman-look the in thing again. You can sense his influence very clearly in the beard and hair of this man.

Trying googling "Chabal" or "Chabalmania". The following link will help understand what he is all about. For context, bear in mind that the New Zealand All Black remain the team that the rugby word fears in terms of skill and physical intensity.

A belt with track pants?
Why not!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:45 PM) :

I think he's wearing track pants over shorts, not full-length chinos. It was chilly on that beach and he's being sensible as well as stylish.

Blogger ES said ... (1:30 PM) :

Those eyes. He can wear whatever he wants. Really, it's ok.

The outfit works for me. The pants match the hair and all this is in between keeps him from looking entirely homeless.

I have a new crush.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:34 PM) :

Oh my god, i m the 83..Nice to meet you Scott, on my blog you can see the photo of you and this mystérious beauty of the sea...I thought at first it was Sebastien Tellier thefrench singer :)Belinda From brussels

the hippie dude look is showing up in cool venues: HOT right now! and he is like one of the best examples of the power of the beard.

Blogger pepastyling said ... (1:30 AM) :

I Agree, who cares what this man is wearing!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:24 AM) :

Hubba hubba! Part elegance part pirate, he's beautiful.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 PM) :

Looks like he tumbled around in all of Wes Anderson's films- dove into Rushmore for a preppy yet artsy vest and suit, then took the track pants from The Royal Tenenbaums, then got spit out at the scene of The Life Aquatic.

Blogger Anastasia said ... (5:02 AM) :

its interesting to see your photos in the mediterranean light...what a stunning man! a powerful shot!

Blogger Claire said ... (10:56 AM) :

Belinda, I thought Sebastian Tellier too...a beautiful man if ever there was one.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:33 PM) :

100%

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:46 PM) :

he's spectacular. it seems as though he'd been more logically dressed and chucked on the casual pants to stay clean or whatever. either way, he looks good.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:00 AM) :

I like the track pants. Where I live, all homeless men wear them, and most of them actually look good/masculine etc.. like book characters. Track pants definitely add character to this person. It's like he stepped out of his condo by the sea to take a walk: he doesn't care.

Blogger Chris said ... (1:44 PM) :

I find all the comments really interesting as I also usually have a beard and dress this way on a regular basis--sweater and collared shirt with track pants or fleece pants. (However, this gentleman is missing the key element of having the dress shirt tails hanging out.) I think it looks horrible, but I like to wear stretchable pants while sitting in a classroom or in the library. I have had some negative comments but also attention from the attractive womens, so I am content.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:52 PM) :

Funny - he reminds of that guy from the Royal Tennenbaums, the son who is an ex-tennis champion, but then fails and goes to live on a boat for years and admits to falling in love with his step sister, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Nice look though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:28 AM) :

This is absolutely great. What about his shoes?

;^)

Blogger Roxana Farahmand said ... (6:36 PM) :

I love his top half but his bottom half is a bit TOO casual for my liking. If the track-pantish stripes were taken away, I think it would look A++.
And what a charming stare he has!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:51 AM) :

Now that is attractive. Both the man and the outfit.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:59 AM) :

i saw thi gorgeous man with monica bellucci in cannes......

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:30 PM) :

He is John Nollet (as it has already been said).
He is a famous hair dresser who works with Vanessa Paradis, Marion Cotillard or Monica Bellucci for exemple.

Blogger Soul Brother No. 7 said ... (12:31 AM) :

He must have been the coldest (or hottest!) man in France that day to throw on all those layers.

Never would have thought I'd see the day that a blazer, sweater, white dress shirt, and khakis underneath Adidas polyesters would be thrown on together.

I vote no on him pulling it off, however. Only thing it did was coordinate colorwise. But simplify it to sweater, sweats, and shirt alone and it would be pretty inspiring.

Anonymous film and music fashion magazine said ... (5:20 PM) :

hey. simply he's so cool.
the man and the sea are the best combinations like hemingway's.
very oneness like almost zen.
very poetic.
it's a very good shot indeed.
he's just showing how to do it here
effortless cool without trying.
