smooth. casual cool

Blogger John and Beatrice said ... (8:44 AM) :

We vote for function over form regarding men's scarves. This photo captures a "Parisian Marlboro Man Dons Too-Cool-For-School Cravat" look that doesn't quite hit the mark.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:47 AM) :

He reminds me of a younger, more stylish Dustin Hoffman. I love his shades of blue.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:07 AM) :

The lapels on the jacket give it a 70's vibe. It looks great. The ticket pocket is a nice detail. Gray flannel is classic.
I suggest buttoning up one more button on the shirt. It' looks a bit to "floppy" under the jacket as it is now.
The scarf is tied nicely. Loose and informal. Goes with the rest of the outfit. I'd have chosen a bolder color to add some punch. Maybe red?

Blogger Dan in Richmond said ... (9:13 AM) :

He's well-dressed, the scarf and jacket are both very nice, but to me his outfit fails to transcend the sum of its' parts- I can't criticize the combinations I just don't find them particularly inspired. Now on a small technicality, the scarf isn't tied at all, is it?

Blogger . . . said ... (9:17 AM) :

Oh he looks super cool. Before I even read the title I figured he was French! I love his silver watch and the twine bracelet he has on.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:24 AM) :

This is masculine, chic, and an excellent statement describing the character of the one wearing it. I see a brown belt -- I wish I could see his shoes. I love brown shoes with black pants almost as much as I love people who say black and brown don't mix.

Blogger John-Bryan Hopkins said ... (9:28 AM) :

YES

wonderful

I love all the blues and how they were all thought out....or not....

they just work

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:35 AM) :

Not sure about the pants but i love the accessories!

Blogger Stratos Bacalis said ... (9:37 AM) :

Looks great - colours perfect... it is just the annoying bracelet turquoise that gets in the way... - that watch should be alone.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:41 AM) :

Nice YSL jacket, but a bit too tight shirt.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:52 AM) :

Thanks for the scarf tieing tip. The colors are so nicely subdued.

Blogger Unknown said ... (9:52 AM) :

Beautiful! Love the jacket with the scarf and the blue combination...nice and smooth.
X

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:52 AM) :

All about the buttons...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 AM) :

Those French guys are ridiculous with their scarves. Other people of the world: just give up.

But the cigarette is a terrible accessory. And it's all about accessories.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:58 AM) :

looks great, and maybe someone tells him in How To Extinguish The Cigarette, that would make him look even better...

Blogger Marianna said ... (10:23 AM) :

this is very very nice, the scarf thing is very French I find.

Blogger Unknown said ... (10:26 AM) :

amazing bleu!

Blogger Brent said ... (10:29 AM) :

Shades of Blue very nice.....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:48 AM) :

I think this is a very sexy look. I love the grey jacket with the navy blue underneath. The scarf is a great touch.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:56 AM) :

Smooth. Très smooth...

Blogger Loulou said ... (11:19 AM) :

i love the reto, early 60s blazer, and riviera neckscarf. I also think the tone on tone mixing of gray/blue is lovely. Are we experiencing a blue and gray moment?

Blogger LINDA from Each Little World said ... (11:20 AM) :

I am waiting for you to publish a little book that is nothing but scarves. Kind of like those small Taschen guides to interiors.

I've downloaded a few pictures to remind myself of different ways to tie my scarves and shawls. You don't have to credit me — just give me an autographed copy!

Blogger Mary said ... (11:23 AM) :

So stylish

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:53 AM) :

What about that hard press on the jacket sleeve?? Intentional or not?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 PM) :

very french. i lovelove his grey jacket and it goes really well with blue! would love to see his shoes though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:00 PM) :

Yes, such a nice jacket. Love the form fitting polo shirt.

Blogger Nick Bograd said ... (12:13 PM) :

Nice casual look I love the fit of his coat and the nice accent with the scarf.

Blogger Dominica said ... (12:17 PM) :

Very Italian kind of dressing although the picture was taken in Paris. By that I mean the 'ton-sur-ton' way of dressing ; the shades of blue are just wonderfully mixed together... love his bracelet too ...

Blogger The Spicers said ... (12:19 PM) :

NICE!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:24 PM) :

this is what all men his age should look like

Blogger Maryli said ... (12:33 PM) :

the colors are awesome and the loose tying of the scarf keeps him from looking like he's trying too hard. i'm not in love with how the shirt fits, but overall...well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:35 PM) :

I'm loving the color palette!!

Blogger farhad said ... (12:50 PM) :

a great look indeed. casual, sporty, masculine, and elegant. it just works. the colors work well together, and I love the scarf. the vintage brown belt is the perfect finishing touch.

Blogger Hannah Stephenson said ... (12:56 PM) :

I agree with Lizzy Washington...a blue and grey moment, indeed!

I love how he's not looking at the camera.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:02 PM) :

I don’t like the cigarette, but he looks hot! Love the scarf.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:20 PM) :

Smoking is cool!

Blogger Hadley Makes said ... (1:56 PM) :

He does wear that outfit so well.

I love how the muted colors still have a marked contrast from each other. Just perfect.

Blogger Carolina Lange said ... (2:11 PM) :

Love this!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:14 PM) :

Can someone please explain to me what, exactly, the point of an ascot is? (I know this isn't an ascot, but I've been wondering for a long time.)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:18 PM) :

Great scarf look, but surely it will constantly come loose?

Blogger TMFA said ... (2:26 PM) :

Hmmm. I like his style but I don't like the colour of the scarf. And that turns it into a 3/5.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:38 PM) :

Love the tweed coat and scarf..wondering why there is a heavy crease on the arm of the jacket? He's super-cool alright.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:44 PM) :

why the hate for the cigarette? it's a part of his look and without it he's not complete. society today in it's crusade to condemn the cancer stick forgets that those that suffer the ill effects of smoking are not merely smokers, but are smokaholics. drink too much, the liver fails. eat too much, beware of diabetes. smoke too much, get ready for cancer. but please god don't let the cigarette die, not when it looks like this. his twine bracelet could be moved to the other wrist, for my input.

Blogger Mohammad said ... (3:51 PM) :

Color harmonies are good, I like tight shirt but not this way. Jacket is perfect fit and scarf cover it good and even could be better if big side was front or on one shoulder not in the back of neck.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:05 PM) :

This is the look I love. Relaxed, french, stylish, cool and smart. The not too perfect done hair and the not too perfect "done" body.

Blogger Honeygo Beasley said ... (5:41 PM) :

What's nice is his scarf tying looks so ... effortless. As if he didn't fuss too much with it.

He gets an "A" for effortless coolness.

Blogger Unknown said ... (5:42 PM) :

Great jacket&overall style. Kind of "myway" attitude, which looks great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:51 PM) :

This man is perfection! The scarf is a nice touch that not every man can pull off, especially one like this :]]

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:10 PM) :

I love the overall look and the fact that the scarf is sort of just wrapped around his neck in a casual manner is superb. It gives an aire of insouciance to the look - a little modern bohemian.
The only thing I am a little put out by is the length of his sleeve - just a tad too short. Another half an inch would have done the job.
Adore the balance of colour.
Good looking gent too.

Blogger PopMachineUK said ... (6:25 PM) :

I want the Jacket.

Blogger Brigadeiro said ... (7:01 PM) :

Tying a scarf is high on my list of things to learn, I just can never do it as effortless & cool as this prime example. Perfect! Parisians have it down to a tee!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:17 PM) :

I love it, I am so wearing a scarf like that tomorrow!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:48 PM) :

1. i disagree on wearing that cellphone in that pocket.

2. scarfing up things works charmingly french. when it's done as hermèsque as here it's even more charming.

3. unfortunately there are no cuffs peeking out. i hope he's not wearing a shirt with short sleeves.

4. also, the shirt looks a bit tight to me.

5. very intreagued about the shoes. perhaps he is wearing that perfect sort of brown leather ones, which is very fine. but if it was summer, i so much hope he would go for a pair of turquoise alligator tod's on bare feet (instead of those two bracelets, which i find quite disturbing).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:35 PM) :

Oh my a new Serge Gainsbourg!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:52 PM) :

also:
how to wear a an awesome blazer

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:02 PM) :

The scarf is great. The smoking is gross. I know that the smoking thing comes up a lot on the comment board, and what I have realized is that (for me) smoking has a devastating effect on sartorial style. I'm not a prude about everything, but I can't appreciate the scarf because of the presence of the smoking. It really is a style issue for me (in addition to the obvious). If Scott's images weren't so sharp, I wouldn't have to face such clear focus on the cigarette.

Blogger John Danner said ... (11:19 PM) :

Looks so effortless.

The shoes, the shoes, what about the shoes!?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:52 PM) :

Nice.

I'm loving the blue + grey and the brown belt is well done.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:23 AM) :

serge, is that you?

Blogger AusAnna said ... (1:24 AM) :

such an amazing photo. it encaptures the essence of paris for me

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (2:10 AM) :

Perhaps too much resolution, because I can not see what he's holding in his right hand.

I dig his jacket!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:14 AM) :

I'm studying in Paris right now, and I am constantly amazed at the different ways the French tie their scarves! it's like they're born with an innate talent for it... I can never get mine to look as cool as they do

anyway, this man looks great.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:15 AM) :

I'm not sure about the twine, but he is definitely well put together.

The cigarette definitely completes his look. If I could do it with the flair of a Frenchman, I would certainly pick up smoking.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:41 AM) :

Cool! I love the coat and the belt! In this outfit brown, blue and black show are harmonic...GREAT!

Blogger Sykofanta said ... (3:56 AM) :

He has a little belly and it is also great, because he isn't so perfectly slender and still he's handsome and so good-looking. He's dressed really super-chic and smart and in the same time easy. Colours are very nice, I love this palette.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:10 AM) :

He's the fashion director of Spanish Marie Claire. Really nice person. And perfectly dress. Colors, clothes, accessories, everything is perfect (except the cigarrette

Blogger JD. said ... (5:11 AM) :

This is beutiful, I love it.

Blogger Stephen Connor said ... (5:26 AM) :

He's a smart guy no doubt - but the scarf makes him look girly.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (6:25 AM) :

love the scarf-braceletes-cigarette combination. love the colour palette. love a little bagginess of the clothes that makes the total look relaxed and sophisticated...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:46 AM) :

what is it with this hatred for cigarettes? let the man have his smoke - he is not killing anyone with it. ESPECIALLY noone who lives on the other side of the world.
life itself can be a rather unhealthy business, so for god's sake stop judging other people for their vices. don't you have any?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:31 AM) :

tie baby tie!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:07 AM) :

Anonymous 3:44: Smoking causes cancer, emphysema and other serious problems, and not just for this person, but for people around him. You can quit it. I did.

As far as drinking, well you can put the drink down, too. Temperance is a good thing. Alcohol, when abused, leads to a lot of problems, societal as well as medical. What's responsible for a lot of violence on a personal level in this world? Alcohol

A drink and a smoke ruin an outfit in my book.

My stylish Western girlfriends were walking down the street in Delhi one day, enjoying a puff, and an older Indian man walked by and said, disapprovingly, "Tsk tsk tsk. Smoking and drinking. Smoking and drinking." I feel like him right now, a Brahmin on a high horse. Sorry, folks. But I stick by my words!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:33 AM) :

i gave up smoking, too. and i used to smoke a lot. but people who think they are better than others just because they quit are really getting to me.
you can decide who to live with, and almost all public places (even over here in europe)are smoke-free. accidently inhaling a whiff of smoke on the street isn't harming anyone. he's french, works for a fashion-magazine; it is probably safe to say that holding a fag is in his dna. let it rip!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:22 PM) :

Even though being a woman (- a restrictive factor?), I tie my scarf like that too! It started when I wore a scarf, made from slippery fabric, which constantly "untied" itself around my neck. So it was easier to just let the ends stay loose like that.
But I think it works only with shorter scarves like that and not the longer ones. Just a thought. Should try it out to see whether I am wrong.
Continuously loving your memory- and thought provoking pictures :).
Merike from Estonia (currently studying in France. By the way, I feel very at home here, enjoying the subtle colors, the elegant details of the clothes the French wear).
Salut

Blogger Unknown said ... (12:45 PM) :

this is a great picture and he has amazing style. i read something about this being a ysl coat, any recommendations where i could find a similar style with a lower price point?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:47 PM) :

Any idea about how to wrap a scarf that way?

Now the real question: has anyone got his phone number???

Blogger You Were There, Too. said ... (3:11 PM) :

I love it. I'll do the same. For scarf.

Blogger stylefather said ... (4:27 PM) :

Makes me want to start smoking again-it looks so cool!
Have also seen this work with a navy linen shirt, which works equally as well.

The fact the scarf looks untied/casual/scruffy pulls the whole look together. Love it all.

Blogger Katy said ... (6:24 PM) :

If all men (and women) dressed this well, the world would be a better place.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:19 PM) :

stylish and very relaxed...

Blogger andrea.at.the.blue.door said ... (11:40 PM) :

I have a couple of scarves that insist on being worn this way - for some reason a knot just ruins the effect. Surprisingly, they stay put just fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:42 AM) :

Great image! It really captures the movement and action of the subject. Would love to know what he is thinking about.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:15 PM) :

There's very special people who have the key to do extraordinary the more common. The name of this key: personal style.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:25 PM) :

A typical "Parisien" ;)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:36 PM) :

chic!

Blogger L said ... (6:43 PM) :

Very Parisian!

Blogger Mayte de la Iglesia said ... (9:20 AM) :

Anonymus, he is not a typical "Parisien". He is Enrique Campos, fashion editor from Marie Claire Spain.

Estas guapisimo!! Que estilazo!!
Besos

Blogger JADED said ... (3:01 PM) :

not sure i'm loving the scarf look, but he pulled this off

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:24 PM) :

i think the look here is great, he looks cool and comfortable in what hes wearing. what i dont like is the huge lappels!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:12 PM) :

where can you get a scarf like that?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:23 AM) :

Blogger Kits said ... (6:08 AM) :

Such a casual stance and so at ease at himself as well

Anonymous Brynn Watkins said ... (2:23 PM) :

This is very typically Parisian composition of styling. Blazer, button down, scarf, and the always look of activity or movement. He has a purpose other then being a model for a fashion blog, he is not looking at the camera, but rather looking ahead and taking a puff of his cigarette nonchalantly, like things like this happen everyday. He is also invoking his American neighbors with the bandanna used as a scarf around his neck. Trés Chic No?
