On the Street......Cardigan, New York City

We're hitting that time of year when a chunky cardigan is, maybe, all you need for outerwear.

Love it... so old school. Would love one for myself for winter. An over sized knit like this, in this colour would be perfection

Short trousers never looked this cool. A real inspiration.

Blogger JULES said ... (10:03 AM) :

I do love the look, but all I can think about it how cold his ankles must be.

What a gent. love the chunky knit and the old well polished shoes. havent quite reconciled myself with the no socks policy though!

Blogger Jorge from W Palm Beach said ... (10:08 AM) :

Even though I was forced to wear maroon pants for my catholic school uniform, I like this cardigan and I think he wears it well. Looks great paired with a basic white shirt and a tie. Hopefully these gents will be plentifully compensated for many many years so they never regret buying/altering their pants to such a short inseam. My only beef is the shoes, which are in desperate need of some edge dressing, but perhaps he was going for this look. Great picture! Jorge from WPB

Blogger Oni said ... (10:27 AM) :

He forgot his socks and to lower his pants. I guess he was trying to spice it up a bit so it would not look so boring. The cardigan and the shoes are okay, I like the maroon.

Blogger john MILLS-PIERRE, III said ... (10:30 AM) :

The cardigan look is classic, but this image reminds me of "Harry Potter: The curse of The Cardigan" advert.

Anonymous Rose said ... (10:30 AM) :

Superbe photo !

Blogger Sartorial Vancouver said ... (10:35 AM) :

... a maroon sport coat would have given the right feel of old school prep.

Anonymous suzanne nelson said ... (10:37 AM) :

Nice look. Lovely photo. I like that he isn't wearing socks, it's not an obvious choice, unexpected.

Blogger The Clever Pup said ... (10:38 AM) :

Oh, yeah. That looks really great.

Blogger Jimmy Porter said ... (10:44 AM) :

The burgundy agains that blue is just divine.

But shoes and no socks is not ok.

Blogger Michael said ... (10:47 AM) :

When did this year's memo about the no-socks thing come out? Must have missed it?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:48 AM) :

I love everything about this look except the lack of socks. All I can focus on are his bare ankles.

Anonymous fashionpersonality said ... (10:56 AM) :

This is cool.

Chic!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:26 AM) :

I think he looks great (of course the pic is well composed, as always, Sart).

Playful outfit. He looks very comfortable and relaxed; it's a "dressy"' alternative to a cotton hoody!

Blogger Michelle said ... (11:34 AM) :

no socks! ewwww!

Blogger The Comet said ... (11:37 AM) :

he looks to be on the verge of flight.. quite pimp..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:33 PM) :

heehee it reminds me of a sweater ron weasly's (from harry potter...)mother would knit for his christmas! snitch wings and all!
enough geeky references, as well as making me giggle at my own uncoolness it is actually a very well put together outfit

Blogger Daisy said ... (1:13 PM) :

It does kind of look like a Harry Potter sweater, :)

This is a beautiful picture. I love the color of the sweater with the forget-me-not blue wall.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:18 PM) :

This is it. Although I keep thinking about the blisters he's getting on his heel or how uncomfortable his feet are! What's The "R" stand for?

Anonymous wwdownes said ... (1:39 PM) :

This works....except bare ankles with Brogues or Oxfords always reminds me of the Great Depression or post war European refugees where for many it was necessary, not the best ideal to reference.Bare ankles with loafers or most other "slip on" footwear is another story.

Blogger Gary K. said ... (1:50 PM) :

I love the colors, and I'm a huge fan of bulky cardigans. The crest ruins for me, though, and I have to admit I don't get sockless with sweater. Kinda like wearing a parka with sandals.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:07 PM) :

Great cardi with the tie! And I love his striding purposefulness.

However, leather shoes without socks is like a nail scratched down a chalk board for me. Sorry!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:32 PM) :

i love. it wreaks of a boys boarding school 80s socklessness. a muted but laChappelian take on Dead Poet Society

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:37 PM) :

I own about three of these type of sweaters from Ralph Lauren--they are are best and very stylish. I am not sure about the no socks things though.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:03 PM) :

LOVE THE CARDIGAN CAUSE I WORKED ON IT LOL.
HAD TO TOOT MY OWN HORN :)

Blogger Fannah said ... (3:23 PM) :

Haha this reminds me of Harry Potter.. he's a plausible Slughorn I believe :p

Anonymous Xavier said ... (3:29 PM) :

This guy looks so cool. I love how he isn't wearing socks.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:40 PM) :

This guy looks so much better than most of the jazzed up dudes I see on this blog. He obviously doesn't have to try so hard to make some sort of LOOK-AT-ME statement(gag!)
Whoever captured him has a great eye.
'Cardigan man' is chilled out but still vibe'n with his short pants and sock-free leisure. plus, those shoes are so classic they could never look bad.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:09 PM) :

yes...no socks!! what a baller!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:32 PM) :

Leather oxfords like that without socks makes me think of blisters and stinky feet...ouch!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:37 PM) :

anyone know where to get nice brogues/oxfords in new york? been searching..

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:58 PM) :

So cool...

Blogger Rita said ... (6:03 PM) :

Awesome! Love his shoes.

Blogger Vecsus said ... (6:56 PM) :

I guess I am getting old because I just don't understand the whole no-socks and short pants thing that so many of you seem to love. Are bare ankles the male version of cleavage?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:07 PM) :

love how the touch of blue on his cuff picks up the stunning sky blue backdrop. classy all-around.

Blogger indigo warrior said ... (9:17 PM) :

Griffindor!?!

Oops ... no, that's an R.

Sorry.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:45 PM) :

Very handsome man. There's definitely an aura of nostalgia in this style-- very prep school, but all grown up, and never contrived. If I had to nick-pick, it's that binder he's carrying...

And that serene shade of blue of the wall is amazing with the burgundy and gold of his cardigan.

Love this. Thank you Sart.

Blogger Starck Mad said ... (10:25 PM) :

Nice Sweater....and nice 'action shot' too!

I don't think I'll ever be on board with the sock-less look. Maybe my feet sweat too much :(

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:48 PM) :

D.
Don't listen to the comments about the "no socks", you look cool and we love you man!
See you saturday

Anonymous Charlemagne said ... (12:20 AM) :

The "R" stands for Ralph Lauren, what else? I believe that that's David Eno, head of product knowledge for RL

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:17 AM) :

wow
he's so trendy

Anonymous acrossthepond said ... (8:02 AM) :

i'm getting the impression because no socks was cool last year it's a complete no-no for this year... too bad, can look good.

Blogger Summer is a Verb said ... (9:08 AM) :

All the RL peeps dress fantastic-ly

Anonymous Giavanna said ... (9:16 AM) :

i am WILD about this look!!!

Blogger PistolPackinMama said ... (9:47 AM) :

Is anyone besides me thinking "R= Ravenclaw/ Maroon and Gold= Gryffindor/ wings= golden snitch?"

Either way, I love that he looks like he has been hanging out in the archives at Hogwarts and is late for convocation.

Absentminded professors make me swoon.

Blogger Amra said ... (11:58 AM) :

Cool.. reminds me of harry potter and gryffindor. Haha! =)

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:19 PM) :

I like his RL look

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:15 PM) :

very 'Take Ivy'

killin. it.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (4:33 PM) :

This guys rules! J. Press with a little sass, and I for all we know he may be wearing loafer socks to avoid those nasty blisters...

Blogger Jack Daniel said ... (10:44 PM) :

Wow, I want his cardigan! And sunglasses....

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:08 PM) :

As always, classic rules. Tweak it a bit to keep it fresh. This clever guy pulls it off perfectly.

Blogger Tyler Scaife said ... (11:15 PM) :

socks the same colour as the lettering on the cardigan would be amazing.

Anonymous ronan the librarian said ... (7:14 PM) :

i agree with steph at 6.09 i thought it was Russ as well! and the harry potter analogy is spookily true!

Blogger Phil Friedman said ... (1:39 AM) :

Nice cardigan ruined by ankle cleavage. Southern gents may skip socks in summer, but you'd better believe the trousers have to fit.

Anonymous Hafiz Azly said ... (3:01 AM) :

Classic, and comfortable

Anonymous Jenn said ... (8:38 PM) :

Ronald Weasley! Where is your sweater!

Anonymous IloveBBQ said ... (8:15 AM) :

We promised you a comment a day!
For all those wondering Mr D. was wearing socks, ped socks if it really matters!
Too bad there is no photo of the lady walking behind him cause she rocks too!!

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:57 PM) :

I'm soooooo tired of the no socks grossness comments. I love the look and pull it off regularly. But, I always, always wear loafer socks from Johnston & Murphy. Perhaps he wears something similar. Cut the guy a break. Also, if you spray your shoes with foot spray and decide not to wear socks - you'll be perfectly fine.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:20 AM) :

Seriously guys, I think this actually IS Russell Crowe. I'm almost certain

Anonymous Stefan Kuzmanov said ... (5:43 PM) :

Great shot!

Anonymous Fashion-Fieber said ... (10:15 AM) :

forgetting your socks seems to in style in NYC? Considering the following pics..;-)

Blogger foilsplinter said ... (10:58 PM) :

totally dig the no-socks and above ankle length trousers. The revealing of bare ankles breaks up the look and breaks it away from complete preppy-ness.
