Love it! Makes me think of Missoni back in the late 80's early 90's.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:43 PM) :

My sentiments would have been better aroused if this was in Mexico, because of those colours but a lovely "exotic" touch on the arid streets of Madrid.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:44 PM) :

LOVE IT!!!!!! She is asesome and beautiful and real!

She should have a solid black top and get and switch those shoes for a black pair. Then it would have been a fierce look. What's going on with some of these pics.A lot of what I'm seeing doesn't even work together AT ALL. This outfit for example.
She almost made the cut. LOL!!!

Blogger SallyO said ... (2:53 PM) :

Those American Apparel ads are really bad! Right now it shows "Rachel in NYC" and it is reminding me of "Tootsie" (NOT in a good way!). I assume they are paying for the space, but some of the spandex stuff is really distracting, even next to that super colorful sweater in Madrid!

ahh....black and red: SO spanish. Sart: Next time you'll have to make it south. Madrid is amazing but Sevilla and Granada are far more rich in culture and each are very distinct.

Blogger Beverly. said ... (3:18 PM) :

Very distinctive style. I love it.

Blogger CW said ... (3:18 PM) :

A nicely multicultural ensemble. Parachute pants, a serape/poncho, a Nike backpack. The ribbon and brooch/necklace about the blouse really make the poncho's colors pop more. Then this young woman's beige boots are truly a complementary neutral.

And of course, the best accessory a young woman can have is a smile. She really looks pleased to be photographed.

quite joan miró inspired. love it. a splash of colour is the soul of style.

Blogger Unknown said ... (3:00 PM) :

confident use of colour that's par for the course with the spanish and particularly in madrid. i'm guessing she's put this together on a budget - the nike logo bag is a give away and also annoying to the aesthete - but respect is due for a very strong look and a great smile.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:24 PM) :

Love the dramatic sweater and how the whole ensemble is well-balanced wrt proportion. However, I find the funny cravat (or is it jewelery meant to look like a bow?) distracting and out-of-place and the shoe color not quite right. Either mustard-colored suede or aged saddle-leather booties would have been a better choice.

What a great shot! This is one of those great photos which illustrates the idea of clothing as a cultural art form in a very direct manner. A personal quirk, perhaps, but I see just a bit of Picasso in this picture-not only in the colors, but in the geometry of the composition, as well. (I'm thinking of some of the early Dora portraits, specifically.)
One of the great things about living in this historic moment is the manner in which all historical and cultural references are coming to be blended together in the way people are dressing today. While this is frightening and challenging for some, those of us who relish the journey of life are entranced by what is parading before us.

Blogger ROB said ... (11:13 PM) :

Blogger Gabriela said ... (11:27 PM) :

Anonymous beautiful nothing said ... (12:13 AM) :

Scott, I've followed your blog for close to 2 years now, but have never posted before.

This young woman displays a gorgeous, assured color sense and sharp attention to proportion, but what enchanted me enough to write is how you captured the strong Madrid sun shining through the knit material of her sweater, visible as a lighter azure triangle just below her uplifted left arm. It's so subtle, it's sublime.

The entire effect -- jet black juxtaposed with the vibrant brights -- reminds me of a daylit stained-glass window seen from inside a darkened cathedral.

Thanks for sharing these glimpses of other worlds and lives with us. There's a master's degree in seeing preserved in these pages.

While it's spring/summer where I live in Australia, I can imagine that in Europe it would be getting rather sobre, in terms of colour (especially judging by your latest photos). In such a season, I imagine her as a sartorial rogue, in her multicoloured cape, playful smile and unusual doublet, running around madrid so that she may gladden the people

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:39 PM) :

Every so often I come here and read your notes. They make me look at your pictures in so many ways. I'm really beginning to think of fashion/of what I wear. Thanks you.
The Nike bag adds a bit of 'reality' to the photo. It was not completely 'styled'. I like it.

The sweater is the only thing I like. The pants and boot combo are just awful. It feels to 1980s.

Wow, this is interesting! She looks cute in that colorful outfit and the girl is sweet. I mean, the cardiknit putted it to a whole other level. Cute.

"shes like the opposite of ugly betty like ptetty betty". I completely agree with this comment.
It's not my style, but I think it works perfect on her.
I hope you enjoyed Madrid!

HMM! I like the jacket it’s very colorful and bright. And the Nike bag is very sporty for the outfit.

People is no longer dressing up, but puting on customes.

I like her vivid color, cool shoes and the black background. But I what about the ad next to all your beatiful photos, American Apparel is that some sort of crule joke? Or is it real cloths people wear? It looks very strange, even ugly. I don't belong to the ironic generation x, born in the sixties make me more the dead serious generation I guess, so I must ask
