i really had to pause at this one.
I initially thought new age goth but I have a feeling that the overwhelming amount of vampire movies had some sort of influence. I love the bermuda shorts! Karl Lagerfeld needs to see this!

I'm taken by the look yet the lipstick just is too much. Love the harness incorporated into a tie.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:56 AM) :

on another level, sartorial avant-garde

Anonymous Emmanuel said ... (9:57 AM) :

Looks are cool but sometimes deceiving. It's funny how people are quick to say it's awesome, when actually, it's your shot and angle that are awesome, instead of the looks. Personal thought.

Black lipstick on such a pure face? Poor choice. The leather harness, get the concept, but then again, why not mix it up with something soft?

Vest and shirt are decent, nothing more.

Shorts are random black hipster shorts.

Not personal to the guy, but when we talk about the sartorialism here, it's not a long story.

Thoughts?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:57 AM) :

This is a really original mashup! S&M breastplate worn as tie with white shirt and suit jacket. Suit pants turned into shorts. Beautiful Monty Clift hairstyle with goth lipstick. I don't see this turning up in the chain stores soon so he should have achieved his objective.

Blogger Lucia said ... (10:15 AM) :

I agree with you Emmanuel. Sometimes the art of this blog stems from the photographer and not the attention-seeking subject. However, I've got to say that the majority of the subjects have got a real sense of style and are not "making a statement".

creepy.
I wish everyone who commented on this site wasn't so gushy over everything. Sure, your shots are great (truly!), but the styles ... not always quite so much.
It strikes me an an "emperor's new clothes' type of scenario-everyone seems to be worried if they don't LOVE everything you post they might be considered (gasp!) uncool... the most heinous sin of the 21st century.
--Just my take on it. I love your site, but the comments are so predictable (for the most part).

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:22 AM) :

I think the lipstick is great but the whole look is a little too "Pinochio" for my taste. That being said, I appreciate his originality.

Anonymous Marisa Alma said ... (10:38 AM) :

Certainly photograph-worthy. I live near San Francisco so it wouldn't surprise me to see this "look" turn up on the street and maybe even in the stores. The S&M collar is an interesting touch. However the fashion "gender-blending" trend is not my favorite.

Blogger Violet Cadburry said ... (10:43 AM) :

Too predictable. Little boy shorts and jacket, so old English school. Black lipstick, boring. Leather piece would be more interesting peeking out from underneath the shirt.

Blogger davidikus said ... (11:10 AM) :

I really like the clean lines on the suit: it falls very well on him (though I am not sure how good the cut really is: always hard to tell in a pic).

The SM accessory is "a" style. Probably not mine! Nice goth make up.

Blogger beths said ... (11:14 AM) :

The use of the harness might set off cool variations I look forward to seeing around. Agree about the occasional pack-mentality "gushiness" described above. It's not as though the blog owner gets too little well-deserved praise, and the photos can indeed be discussed separately from the way his subjects are dressing. And then the overlap between those two strands can get even more interesting.

Love this shot. I would hire this young man in an instant

Just wish I could see his shoes.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:33 PM) :

Excellent New Romantic Goth groove with a steampunky twist--the shorts have an Edwardian schoolboy feel, and in this context, the bit of visible harness looks more baroque than fetish.

Blogger Dina said ... (12:40 PM) :

I agree that the art is in the composition of the photo and not the young man's style, which just seems a little self-conscious and "artfully" put together instead of a natural look for him.

100% not my style. 100% his style and that's what makes it interesting. He's way more intriguing to me than everyone who wears the latest fashion "uniform".

Whatever everyone thinks of the subject, we can probably all agree the photography is top-notch.

Blogger LaScarparossa said ... (1:12 PM) :

His face expression with that massive amount of lipstic made me think of a kind of Alexander McQueen's black version make-up. Just at first sight. I would have loved his style if he hadn't used it and with a different hairstyle. Maybe something a bit more natural. It seems as if it were a VERY studied look. The shot is great though.

Blogger Unknown said ... (1:40 PM) :

I lvoe the shirt and the lipstick, cool!

http://facehunter.blogspot.com/

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (1:40 PM) :

not everything original is particularly fashionable, in my opinion. while the overall product shows considerable effort (too much so?) it clashes more than complements. there are some interesting and certainly photography-worthy elements and as usual the photography is brilliant.

Blogger Sabeeha said ... (3:05 PM) :

I think the point of taking pictures is to capture something eye catching, something that makes a statement. I don't love this look, but if I had seen him on the street I would have taken a picture too. It's art, and in order to be appreciated, it doesn't have to be "loved". I also think people are too gushy

Anonymous lucy said ... (3:22 PM) :

Fierce! and different, I love it.

Anonymous FeeFee said ... (3:30 PM) :

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:37 PM) :

There seems to be a strong reaction to the lipstick BUT I have to wonder if he hadn't worn it if anyone would have even taken notice. Particurlaiy of the harness which is risque but also, surprisingly converstive, due to the basic palate.

I don't care about the lipstick colour like everyone here, but I wish the coat colour matched the shorts at least somewhat.
Anyway, my biggest issue is that this seems very contrived- I wonder what he looks like on any other day.

interesting look. I think the black shorts, something that I cannot stand with dark blue, work because of the leather necklace/tie thing.

Anonymous candleashes said ... (12:05 AM) :

Usually when you post something from NYC, even if it looks new and original, I can at least place the people into context of a neighborhood or some familiarity. This looks completely different from what I'm used to seeing and I've lived here over 10 years now. The elements are familiar, but the way it's put together is something else. The facial expression really makes it.

I'm a little confused. People are calling this look "contrived," yet if Anna Dello Russo stuck a coffee table on her head and draped herself in fairy lights, many commenters would swoon. (Yes, you would--how many of you called the infamous Extraordinarily Rude Stage-Blocking Look-At-Me Headpiece "fabulous"?) What, precisely, is the difference her looks and this young man's, which I find far more stylish, fresh, and interesting? That's a serious question. And no, some variant of "ADR is just a goddess" does not qualify as an answer.

One person's "contrived" is another person's "brilliant fashion statement". Such are the inconsistencies of human nature and the susceptibility of people to be swayed by the rich and famous. I just think that this young man gets a big kick out of finding a way to express himself through his attire. Good for him.
